Word Play Speech Therapy

Speech/Language Screening

Speech/Language Screening

Have you wondered if your child is behind in their speech or language skills? Or maybe your child's pediatrician told you to "wait and see" but you want the opinion of a speech-language pathologist? Word Play Speech Therapy is offering speech/language and motor screenings to children ages 2 through 6 years on August 18th, 2026. (If you would also like a motor screening you must schedule that separately.)

A screening provides a short “snapshot” of information about your child’s speech and language skills and is not a substitute for a full evaluation. Screenings help determine if a child should be referred for further evaluation.

Speech/language screenings are recommended for children who:
  • Have difficulty answering questions like “who, what doing, where”, choice or yes/no questions.
  • Need directions to be repeated several times.
  • Repeat sentences from adults, peers, TV shows and songs but aren’t using their own sentences.
  • Aren’t talking as much as their peers.
  • Are difficult to understand.
  • Have difficulty labeling the correct vocabulary words.
  • Have stuttered for more than 6 months or have a family history of stuttering.
  • Delete or substitute sounds in words.
  • Aren't using 2 word phrases by age 2.
At the end of the screening, your speech-language pathologist will provide an immediate recommendation.

Please note, if your child currently has a diagnosis, IEP or previous therapy, your child is not eligible for a screening. Screenings are only useful to determine if a child needs a full evaluation. No goals will be provided at the screening.
