Motor Skills Screening

Have you wondered if your child is behind in their motor skills? Or maybe your child's pediatrician told you to "wait and see" but you want the opinion of an occupational therapist? Word Play Speech Therapy is offering speech/language and motor screenings to children ages 2 through 6 years on August 18th, 2026.  (If you would also like a speech/language screening you must schedule that separately.) 

A screening provides a short “snapshot” of information about your child’s motor skills and is not a substitute for a full evaluation. Screenings help determine if a child should be referred for further evaluation. 

Motor screenings are recommended for children who:

  • Toe walk
  • Are hesitant on playground equipment or bounce houses
  • Don't alternate feet walking down the stairs
  • Have difficulty catching or throwing a ball
  • Can't cut in a straight line with scissors
  • Switch preferred hands
  • Have trouble putting puzzle pieces together
  • Struggle with zippers, buttons and other fasteners
  • Have difficulty with writing letters and numbers
  • Hold writing utensils with a thumbs up or fisted grasp
  • Tires quickly or avoids coloring/drawing
  • Need an adult's help to open containers 
At the end of the screening, your occupational therapist will provide an immediate recommendation.

Please note, if your child currently has a diagnosis, IEP or previous therapy, your child is not eligible for a screening. Screenings are only useful to determine if a child needs a full evaluation. No goals will be provided at the screening.
